John Oates (OD): Poetry about youth, life & death in a time of war
As part of the Foxwood House Arts Festival in Houghton, Jhb, on Tuesday 25 October at 18h00, Peter Hyslop, former HOD and Arts Teacher at Bishops and his cousin, Merilyn Park, will present a reading of poetry by an OD, John Oates (1923-1945), and reflections on his life.
A special presentation at the historic homestead Burra-Burra at Foxwood House, Houghton, Johannesburg.
On Tuesday 25 October at 18h00, Peter Hyslop and Merilyn Park will present a reading of poetry by John Oates (OD) and reflection on his life. John Oates, an aviator and poet, was a Spitfire Pilot with no. 1 Squadron, SAAF, tragically killed in action on 28 November 1943, at the age of 20.
In the setting of John’s family home, known as Burra-Burra, 11 Fifth Street, Houghton, the event will be held to celebrate John’s short life and achievements as a poet.
