New SA Skipper

Just when the jersey was framed and the plaque engraved, Dayaan took it up a notch!

Last week we received the wonderful news from Steven Riches (2003/4K) that The South African Hockey Association had proudly announced Dayaan Cassiem (2017W) as the new SA Hockey squad Captain. As Steven so aptly put it:

An amazing achievement for someone so young

This news came shortly after we received two jerseys back from framing.  These were both gifted to us by two of our ODs who have represented South Africa for field hockey.  Dr Paul Murray sent them to be mounted and framed as part of the museum jersey collection just before leaving for Cambridge.  One of these was John McInroy (1999S) who represented South Africa in 2001 as an U21 and again from 2003 all the way to 2006.

The other jersey came from Dayaan.  The plaque of his being outdated already because of his recent achievement of being selected as Captain of the SA Hockey Team.  This now needs to be added to the list of achievements that include:

  • SA National Field Hockey 2020
  • Summer Olympics 2022 ; and
  • The Commonwealth Games 2023

The ODU would like to thank both John and Dayaan for generously giving us their jerseys.  In particular, we want to congratulate Dayaan and wish him all the best for the upcoming tournaments.  Well done to a very deserving and humble person!
