John Hueton who matriculated at Bishops in 1947 (GH; PM 1948), Honorary Secretary of the ODU Branch in Canada from 1976, serving in that position until 2018, an uninterrupted period of 42 years (the Branch eventually split into Western and Eastern Canada, with John heading up the latter in Ontario), currently one of the Union’s most senior of all ODs and passionate for it and the school, recently contacted us and wanted to know if any of our ODs may be  interested in overseas study in Canada.

John asked us to share the following information that he believes may be useful to anyone looking to study there.

John reports:

“There are plenty of good Canadian Universities right across the country, the following are the best …”

(We have included the websites in case readers wish to access them to do some further viewing and see opportunities for bursaries /scholarships.)

If you type the name of the Uni plus bursaries/scholarships for 2023 it is amazing just how many there are to see!

  • Dalhousie, in Nova Scotia   https://www.dal.ca/
  • McGill, Montreal   https://www.mcgill.ca/
  • Carleton, Ottawa   https://carleton.ca/
  • Toronto,   https://www.utoronto.ca/
  • York, Toronto   https://www.yorku.ca/
  • Waterloo (tops in science and engineering) … there is the Institute for Quantum Computing and Perimeter Institute of Theoretical Physics which is newish but already one of the tops in the world   https://uwaterloo.ca/
  • Queens in Kingston    https://www.queensu.ca/
  • Western in London   https://www.uwo.ca/
  • McMaster  https://www.mcmaster.ca/
  •  Alberta   https://www.ualberta.ca/index.html
  • Uni of British Columbia in Vancouver, great for homesick Capetonians as it has sea and mountains, also skiing   https://www.ubc.ca/
  • Uni of Victoria on Vancouver Island   https://www.uvic.ca/

John has also kindly supplied details of other places to study such as law & business schools:

LAW schools:

  • University of Toronto has Osgoode Hall.
  • Western has similar Roman Dutch Law and even UK Law requires localisation here, takes two years of study and exams - CPA Western School of Business.
  • Western and Queens also. Quebec has different legal system, but McGill offers a joint common law/civil program.

Business Schools, many, but MBA’s have become a commodity.  To check the rating of the business schools CLICK HERE.

Schulich School (York) is #1 in Canada, and Degroote School (McMaster) in Burlington ON is worth looking at.

Forestry is big in University of Toronto and University British Columbia (UBC).

Mining/Geology in Toronto, McGill, Queens, Alberta(oil) and UBC.

Engineering is good almost anywhere, it helps getting into the profession to study here, otherwise there are lots of exams to study for to get registered professionally.

Medicine is common, Sask, McMaster, Toronto, Queens, McGill, UBC.

John writes further:

“Housing in Canada is now ridiculously expensive, but all Unis have in-house for first year, then lists of available local apartments/houses for groups to rent.

Scholarships suitable for Bishops sports - rugby, squash and basketball.  Many unis also offer on-line courses.”

And here is an invitation from John!

“We have ODs in many cities and professions who could give advice.  Just ask!”

We thank John for this initiative and taking so much time over it for the benefit of graduate ODs and Post Grad/post Doc students.

John can be contacted at jwhuetonod90@yahoo.com  and he will be glad to assist or connect you, or write direct to Lynn Swanevelder (ODU Office) at oducomms@bishops.org.za  or Paul Murray at pmurray@bishops.org.za
