Director of Vulcan Wildfire Management and member of the Volunteer Wildfire Services, Patrick Ryan (1985O) reports: On Sunday night of the 18 April the wind swung to a southerly and drove the already extensive and aggressive Game Camp Fire around the mountain in the opposite direction to that of the preceding day. This pushed it up and over and around the mountain towards the suburbs of Devils Peak Estate and Vredehoek, as well as down into Walmer Estate and University Estate.
The threat to life and property remained very real as the gale force winds proved to be almost unstoppable to the fire spread.
The firefighting crews of the City of Cape Town, Volunteer Wildfire Services, NCC Wildfires, WOFire and Table Mountain National Parks would continue to be sorely tested and pushed in the constant battle to keep the fire from causing more damage to the surrounding Wildland Urban Interface areas.
Only the eventual change of weather conditions late on Monday evening allowed for the fire to be properly contained.
