John (Chalky) White (1964F) passes away

He was a reserved man, a deep thinker, a true gentleman - and a proud Bishops Boy!

We received the sad news that John I White (1964F), fondly known as Chalky, passed peacefully away in Strand on 15 September 2023, at the age of 76, after a brief illness.

He was married to Marina who sadly passed away 8 years ago.  It was his son, Andrew who let us know of his passing.  Andrew had the following to say about his father:

He was a reserved man, a deep thinker, a true gentleman - and a proud Bishops Boy!  He relished adventure locally and abroad and had a refined, deep sense of humour.

John was a qualified Civil Engineer, and an avid Pilot.  The ultimate for many who choose a career in aviation is becoming a senior Captain and that is exactly what he did.  He retired as a Senior Captain in SAA on the 747-400's in 2009, and was also a successful commercial property landlord.

A lovely celebration of his life was held in Somerset West United Church on 22 September.

He leaves behind his children Andrew, Michelle and two Grandchildren Isabelle and Jessica. Our sincerest condolences go to his family and friends.
