Passing of Michael James Simpson (1957W)

We say farewell to former Johannesburg OD branch secretary

We received the sad news of the passing of Michael James Simpson (1957W) from Warwick Jones (1961S).  Michael passed away peacefully on Friday, 30 August 2024.

Mike’s passing marks the end of a courageous battle with prostate cancer, a struggle he faced with remarkable fortitude. As a senior partner at the Johannesburg law firm Bell Dewar and Hall, he earned the admiration of both clients and colleagues, standing as a pillar of integrity and expertise within the legal community. His keen intellect and insight, particularly on current affairs, made him a valued voice; friends and peers alike often sought his perspective.

Beyond his professional life, Mike was a fixture on the tennis court, hosting a weekly tennis school where he was known for his swift, playful repartee - often sparking lively exchanges with non-OD players. His regular attendance at club lunches added a distinguished presence, and as former Johannesburg OD branch secretary, he strengthened bonds within the community.

He leaves behind his wife, Karin, his son Bruce and grandson in the UK, and his daughter Laura. His enduring friendship with university peer and legal colleague, Kevin Gill (OB RBHS), was a lifelong source of support.

Mike will be remembered for his wisdom, camaraderie, and loyalty to the OD community. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
