TIM BRAVINGTON (S, 1951)
8 February 1934 - 29 March 2020
I am very sorry to pass on the news that after a short illness, Tim passed away peacefully this afternoon.
After Bishops Tim went to Rhodes University for eighteen months. His father wanted him to go to a UK University and managed to get him into Trinity College, Cambridge where he read English Literature and Divinity. He trained at Cuddesdon for two years before travelling by land and sea back to the Cape. He was made Deacon in Holy Trinity, Caledon, in September 1958. His Rector was Foster van der Byl (1941F). Tim was ordained Priest in St George's Cathedral, Cape Town, the following year.
After three years in Caledon, he went to St Andrew's, Grahamstown, as Assistant Chaplain where he became great friends with the Headmaster, Spencer Chapman.
Then onwards as Rector of Namaqualand, where, for his first year, Ali Mac Gregor (1951S) was his assistant.
Rosemary and he were engaged there (an event which Tim described "as a very long story") after which they moved to the Church of the Transfiguration, Bellville, in 1971. There. both of them became Lifeline Telephone Councillors.
After Bellville, he and Rosemary moved to St Martin in the Fields, Durban North, where they also continued with Lifeline.
In 1984, as the newly-appointed Rector of St Mary's, Stellenbosch in 1984, just after there had been a major split in the congregation, the job of reconciliation and healing was left to Tim as incoming Rector. While there, US academics began to say they couldn't support the National Party and he was able to arrange for, and attend, a meeting of five of them with Archbishop, Demond Tutu.
His last parish was St Michael and All Angels, Elgin.
After a quadruple bypass, he had to retire and he and Rosemary rented Long Barn on Rustenberg Farm outside Stellenbosch.
They moved to Oxford ten years later, where he worked in a number of locums in the Diocese of Europe.
We will miss Tim very much at our OD Oxford Pub lunches which over many years, and other matters ODU, he was a staunch, loyal and enthusiastic supporter.
To Rosemary and Des (1991W) and Helen, we extend our sincerest condolences. Should you wish to write to Rosemary, her email address is timbrav@gmail.com
RIP, Tim
