Anthony Hugh Vaughan Davies (1956W) | 1938 - 2020

Anthony Hugh Vaughan Davies was proud of the fact that he had been a pupil at Bishops and he was a loyal Old Boy standing up to the banter and derogatory remarks from Old Boys of other schools.  He spent most of his life in commercial business but found time for sport, cricket and rugby where he also served as a referee for a time at Provincial level. He had a more serious side to him, as a committed Christian, he sought to bring about positive changes and improvements in the business sector of the community.  In the year 2000, he realised a need for a clean-up of the crime and grime in which Claremont was bogged down so he approached the managers of various businesses who welcomed the opportunity and supported the establishment of the CIDC (Claremont Improvement District Company)

The results were that the streets were now clean, informal traders organised, street children were taken care of and crime declined. Through Anthony’s tireless lobbying and skilful diplomacy, an Amalgamated Traffic Service was negotiated between Jammie Shuttle and the Taxi Services which meant that the traffic was better organised.

On retiring from the CIDC Anthony was approached by Max Price the Vice Principal of UCT to start a similar work in Rondebosch which became known as the Groote Schuur Improvement District (GSCID) which led to better security for university students and the precincts of UCT and Rondebosch business area and Baxter Theatre. On the 26th of May 2009, Anthony received a Certificate of Recognition of his service to the community from the City of Cape Town which was presented to him by the Sub-council Chairman Owen Kinahan.
