John Lindsay Max de Villiers (1954S) | 1938 – 2021

John passed away peacefully at his house in Johannesburg on the 29th of January 2021, after a period of ill health. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family at this time.

The Cape has a special place in our Dad’s heart not least withstanding that he met and married our Mom there, attended Bishop’s from a young age, spent weekends/holidays with Jocelyn and Doreen and later developed an appreciation for all things wine.

As a chartered accountant, investing in sound company stock underpinned by his knack for industry knowledge and trends saw John grow his company JD International into a success. His desire to better the world got him involved in a shelter for street children in Hillbrow called Twilight Children, running for a local independent councillor, and funding numerous other charities and helping individuals on an ongoing basis.

Reading newspapers and financial magazines was a continuous habit. Dad dedicated many years to lay ministry in the church and Sunday School was a non-negotiable for us children when growing up. He also had an appreciation for clocks, paintings and other items found on the auction circuit.

Holidays for us were often business trips for Dad, which gave us children the space to be adventurous and mischievous in places like Lesotho and Swaziland. A generous man, not always on the right side of everyone, but he stuck by his principles and lived a full life.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family at this time. John is survived by Barbara Stephne; children Caroline, Lindsay and Michael and grandchildren Abigail, Daniella and Jean
