‘Faint heart never won fair maiden’

This was a favourite saying of the legendary Basil Bey. He would have smiled contently as the Cobras (consisting of mostly ODs) went hammer and tongs at the Nadoes (consisting of mostly RBHS Old Boys) at the UCT Green Mile in the Internal Rugby League Final.

After leading 3-0 at half time, the Cobras had to defend like Trojans to absorb the almighty onslaughts produced by the never-say-die Nadoes.

The handling in the late, moist evening by both sides was sublime, and the second half enfolded in a tremendous tussle of determined defence and outstanding attack.

In the end the Cobras’ mantra of ‘Oh so brave’ paid off and they deservedly won a spectacular match with six points to five

The supporters enjoyed every moment.  OD Alex Myeki (2021S) had his whole family in support.  After the game his younger brother, Zinzan had the joyous experience of posing (trophy in hand) with OD and Captain, Tom Liefeldt (2019F).

False Bay RFC Chairman Kevin Lennett (1984O) was present to support the False Bay U20 side who won the 3rd place playoff match, and also his son Matt Lennett (2019O), vice-captain of the Cobras.

Supporting the Cobras on the sideline were other ODs.  Among them was John Koster (1979F), whose brother Charlie’s son James, started as fullback for the Cobras.  Also there was advocate Lourens van Zyl (2000K).

It was a night to be remembered.
