The Bishops OD Union warmly acknowledges and celebrates the inaugural 2026 derby between Diocesan College and Hilton College , a fixture that already shows the makings of something truly meaningful within South African schoolboy rugby.

At the outset of the tour, a memorable braai function was hosted at  the farm of Andrew Eaton (1992F), bringing together KwaZulu-Natal ODs and partners for an Afternoon of connection, shared stories, and camaraderie. The Union extends its sincere thanks to Andrew for his generous hospitality in creating such a special and welcoming occasion.

From the outset, there was a clear sense that this was more than a standard set of school rugby fixtures. The early starts, travel arrangements, and the journey itself contributed to an experience that challenged and broadened the boys beyond their usual routines. It provided an opportunity to grow, both individually and collectively, in a new environment.

While results on the field favoured Hilton overall, the competitive nature of the matches told a far more encouraging story. The games were closely contested and played in excellent spirit. Of particular significance was the opportunity afforded to every Bishops rugby boy to take the field, a testament to the values of inclusion, development, and shared experience that underpin the programme.

Off the field, the derby delivered equally meaningful benefits. Time spent travelling and preparing together strengthened bonds between teammates, while moments away from competition allowed for deeper connections to form. The opportunity for players to engage with coaches in a more relaxed, personal setting further contributed to building trust and a strong team culture.

One of the most valued aspects of the tour was the camaraderie that developed across opposition lines. Friendships formed between Bishops and Hilton boys added depth to the rivalry, reinforcing the unifying spirit of the game and the respect that defines it.

The derby also provided valuable exposure to strong opposition, opportunities for growth under pressure, and the privilege of representing the school with pride. Just as importantly, it created lasting memories that will remain with the boys well beyond their school years.

The Union recognizes that there are practical considerations , including travel costs and the limited duration of the tour and that maintaining competitive balance will be important as the fixture evolves. However, these are outweighed by the broader value and potential of what has been established.

Ultimately, the 2026 derby is viewed as a resounding success. Not solely for the rugby played, but for the character built, friendships formed, and experiences shared along the way.

With sincere thanks to Hilton for their warm hospitality, and to Mr Ronald Jacobs (Head of Rugby) for his organization in making the tour possible, this inaugural chapter lays a strong foundation for the future. Looking forward to 2027.

This is more than a fixture — it is a tradition in the making.
