Andy Selfe (1968F) is a regular correspondent.
He recently restored to working order the watermill at Boskloof, a farm in the Overberg.
Andy is considered one of South Africa's foremost molinologists (an expert in the study and operation of mills). He was recognised at the Cape Town Civic Honours Ceremony in December 2023, where he, along with the Restoration Committee of Mostert’s Mill, received a Mayor’s Medal.
His most recent project is the restoration to working order of the watermill at Boskloof. The restoration was started by current owner Thys De Villiers’ father, late Japie, one time MP for Caledon. The result is a working water-wheel on the outside, fed by natural water flow from the hills behind.
Inside, after working on the millstones and the so-called pit-wheel, making and fitting a full set of cogs, Andy and Team have a fully-operational stone-mill which makes lovely whole-wheat meal.
Andy certainly does not sit still, with more restoration work in the pipeline.
