The ODU congratulates Vernon on a major award.

His recent book 'On That Wave of Gulls' received the number one award for fiction.

The judge's comments, read as follows: ‘On That Wave of Gulls stood out from the  literary flock as a raging, raving masterpiece of multiple voices and poetic narrative, revealing the fissures - political, historical, human - that lie beneath the Cape of Storms.'

The award is made by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture.

The ODU hosted a book discussion on several occasions, with Vernon on his book, which is reported in the following link https://www.litnet.co.za/on-that-wave-of-gulls-by-vernon-head-a-book-review/

One of these was at The Mitre to a packed audience; the other was hosted (virtually) by Nic Searle of the East Canada branch.

We take this opportunity of saying well done, and here's to the next book.

The ODU is honoured to host book discussions with ODs.  More recently one such discussion was held with Simon Winter (1970G) on his book 'Charles Leonard' (reported on on 14 March 2024 on this website) with more planned for the year.
