We are very sad to say goodbye to John "Rusty" Crowhurst (1961G) who died in Yarnscomb, Devon on the 5th March after a long battle with cancer. His son Damon (1991F) wrote a heartfelt tribute to his father:

"Dad, Last night you went to join the stars in heaven and strengthen the forces of good. Rest well and then ready yourself for battle.

Thank you for my incredible upbringing ... full of the joys a child should know. Thank you for sending me to the most amazing school. It truly was a sacrifice. I was always so proud of you and your commitment to staying on the right side of the line. Your integrity and commitment to others was immense. If only the rest of the judiciary in South Africa was as committed and honest. Hand building in your Claremont garden a 44 foot yacht, 2 cars including Caractacus [shown in the photo with Rusty] the Merlin Tank engine monster that gave you so much joy and pride".

He had been living in Devon for the final 7 years of his time with Damon who asket us to also publish a snippet from a letter that his father's work colleagues at Bisset Boehmke McBlain law Firm in Cape Town wrote.

This was his primary employer where he started as a junior attorney in 1970 and retired in 2016 as a Partner.
They wrote:

Those of us who benefited from Rusty's contribution to Bissets have been moulded by the values he so readily fought for and espoused over the years of his involvement as a partner. It is incumbent on us, his former partners that his legacy of those values of fairness and justice be practised with the same diligence for future generations at Bissets. For that legacy we are profoundly thankful. In a world where increasingly the worship of ego is recognised and encouraged, people like Rusty offer an alternative reality where self is subsumed for the common good. To Rusty, our partner, fellow team player and a thorough gentleman, Tot siens
