Class of 1956

We received the sad news that Richard James Dendy Young (1956S) passed away aged 84 on Wednesday, 21 June at his home in Kenilworth, Cape Town.  He was surrounded by his loving family at the time.

Gill, his wife who he had been happily married to for almost 60 years, telephoned to let us know.  He had been struggling with health issues since he contracted COVID a last year.  The last year of his life had been particularly challenging and he had difficulty with his mobility.

Richard was an excellent all-rounder doing well in both sport and academics.  He was awarded the Rhodes Scholarship in 1957.  He was also Head of School House.  He stayed connected to his school and tutored maths at White House for many years.  He followed a career in teaching until his retirement.

He leaves behind his wife, Gill, his two daughters (Sarah Bovim and Bridget Baalbergen) and four grandchildren.

There will be a Thanksgiving Service for this life on Tuesday, 25 July at 2PM at Christ Church in Kenilworth should anyone want to attend.

Please contact Gill if you want to let her know you are attending per telephone on 084 362 6966.

Gill had the following to say about Richard's passing:

It is a great loss for the family but a merciful release for Richard.

We send our deepest condolences to everyone who knew and loved him.
