The Old Diocesan community is deeply saddened by the passing of Mr Abdul-Aziz “Cassa” Cassiem , a humble man, a devoted family figure, and a true giant of South African and more recently Bishops hockey.

Affectionately known to generations as Coach Cassa, he was a father figure to many a Bishops boy and a mentor to countless young hockey players across South Africa.

At any time of the year, a drive past Woodlands would likely reveal him doing what he loved most, coaching youngsters in all weather conditions, selflessly giving his time, patience and wisdom to the next generation.

Coach Cassa was, above all, a family man. He spoke of his loved ones with quiet pride and deep admiration, and was especially proud of his sons, ODs Dayaan and Mustapha, whose remarkable international and olympic hockey achievements on the world stage brought him immense joy.

His dedication to Bishops Hockey was unwavering and spanned every level of the game. Whether coaching U7s and U8s, U11s, the 12A side or the College 1st XI, he approached each team in exactly the same way, with passion, consistency and respectfully, treating every player equally and honouring the game that gave him so much.

Cassa was a talented player in his own right, representing WP Juniors, Unicorns Hockey Club, SASSSA and Central Hockey Club, before naturally transitioning into coaching.

It was in coaching, however, that his true gift shone, shaping lives, building character and instilling a deep love for hockey in countless young players and coaches.

A true legend of the game, a coach extraordinaire and friend to so many, his impact cannot be measured in trophies or results alone, but in the lives he touched, the values he passed on, and the legacy he leaves behind.

His legacy will live on through the countless players he mentored and inspired, and through his sons, who continue to represent South African hockey with distinction.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Cassiem family at this incredibly difficult time. May they find comfort in knowing the profound and lasting influence Coach Cassa had on so many Bishops lives.
