Howard Cooke (1972G) reports: Many OD’s will recall with no doubt happy memories this starter school back in the 1950’s-60’s.

It was officially called Sunnyways but more fondly referred to as Miss Eaton’s, situated in Rosebank at the bottom of Pillans Road next to the river.

Bishops pre-primary did not exist until the mid-60’s so it was a major feeder school.

Richard Newton, one of the “Old Etonians”, conceived the idea and made contact with eleven of the class of 1962 of which nine very eagerly came with patient wives. All have homes in Cape Town.

Held at Paul Whitaker’s house, greatly embellished by copious supplies of Paul’s outstanding wine high up on the John Platter score-card, it turned into a hearty and hilarious gathering of an old brotherhood which recalled in detail much that happened back in 1960-2.

All attendees matriculated together in 1972. Collectively that adds up to over half a century of friendship.

A common theme seemed to gravitate around things we were allowed to do that today would be regarded as not permissible, such as walking and falling on rolling forty-four-gallon drums, the entire class haring down the road chasing an escaping colleague, and being allowed to play in the Liesbeeck canal. A few old school reports were proudly produced, but it seems that quite a few lads all came first in class. Bless Miss Eaton and Aunty Ellie!

For those that missed it – no worries - we will do it again in the next 60 years as we approach our millennium.
