Today 21 March 2024 is Human Rights Day in South Africa.

Human Rights Day is a public holiday and a day off for the general population, and schools and most businesses are closed.

The day marks an affirmation by South Africans to commemorate Human Rights Day as a reminder of our fifteen rights enshrined in the Constitution and the fact that until 1994, Human Rights were not universally applied in the country.

As a way of commemorating this day at Bishops, different constituencies, including the Houses and members of Staff, designed posters to represent the event.

The posters can be seen appended to the facade of the Memorial Chapel making it very visible to the observer each with the artists' own views of what the day means, as well as naming and describing the fifteen basic human rights.

This weekend, in which Humas Rights Day falls, coincides with a  massive Sport tournament at Bishops as part of its 175 Celebrations.  The fixtures can be accessed by clicking on THIS LINK.

Today, Thursday 21 March ODs face Old Michaelhousians in a rugby match on the Piley at 3.30pm as a curtain raiser to the main match of the day between Bishops’ 1st XV and the Michaelhouse 1st XV.

On Saturday 23 March, ODs face Old Andreans in a rugby match on the Piley at 3.30pm as a curtain raiser to the main match of the day between Bishops’ 1st XV and the St Andrew's 1st XV.

We wish all a meaningful Human Rights Day, and all who are participating and spectating in the tournament at Bishops, well.
