On Friday, 24 April, a group of ODs, their partners, and a few Bishops parents gathered at Andrew (1992F) and Paula Eaton’s farm, Colmonell, in Dargle, KZN. The occasion was held on the eve of the much-anticipated Bishops vs Hilton rugby fixture.
Those in attendance included:
• Andrew Eaton (1992F)
• Luthando Matsaluka (1992 F), who travelled all the way from Johannesburg
• Mike Muller (1965S)
• Frans Karel te Water (1965F)
• Geoff Calmeyer (1961S)
• Pieter Graaff (1976F), who flew in from Cape Town with his wife, Jolanda, in his capacity as a parent
• Simon Koch (1977S)
• Ed Read (1963S)
• David Hawkins (1966S)
• John Inglis
Later in the afternoon, Pierre and Fern Lategan, parents of a rugby-playing son, also joined the gathering.
The event began at 1pm, with Andrew’s father-in-law, Tony Balmer (Maritzburg College 65), generously offering his expertise on the Weber. He took charge of preparing four lambs across three Weber braais, assisted by farm manager Gary Maslin (Churchill, Zimbabwe 86). Together, they produced an outstanding meal that was thoroughly enjoyed by all. A special thanks must also go to Paula Eaton, whose delicious salads perfectly complemented the feast.
Bruce Jack (F 87) kindly donated the wine for the day, a gesture that did not go unnoticed. The ODs in attendance were extremely grateful, with many commenting on the exceptional quality of the wine.
From the moment the first guests arrived, there was a palpable sense of excitement. It quickly became clear how much this gathering meant, particularly as it has been nearly 20 years since the last OD event in KwaZulu-Natal.
Old friendships were rekindled, and new ones formed, united by the enduring brotherhood fostered by Bishops. Conversations flowed easily, covering a wide range of topics connected to the school. It was evident that everyone present shares a deep affection for Bishops, with its heritage running strongly through them all.
The afternoon wrapped up around 5pm, as everyone was eager to get to the early games the following day.
It was, by all accounts, a truly memorable afternoon—one that left many hoping it won’t be another 20 years before the next gathering.
