On Tuesday, October 3, history and theology enthusiasts gathered at The Mitre for the first installment of a series of colloquia that promises to to offer some intriguing insights into the past. The event drew an audience of 35, consisting largely of Old Diocesans (ODs) who embraced the opportunity to delve into the rich history of Bishops and its former students.

Peter Hyslop, former staff member, took the stage to share a poignant tribute to his uncle, John Oates, who made the ultimate sacrifice during World War II. John, who was in School House, had enlisted as an airman.

It became apparent that he was not just another student; he was part of a cultural renaissance fostered under the leadership of Principal Hubert John Kidd. This was vividly reflected in the poems he authored, which were recited during the event by Peter's cousin, Merry.

The emotional presentation by Peter, combined with the heartfelt readings, left the audience deeply moved and appreciative.

Dr. Paul Leonard Murray, the second speaker, shifted the focus to Bishop Colenso. He shed light on how Colenso's time at St John's College in Cambridge deeply influenced his intellect and how he brought these experiences to bear in his work and ministry.

The presentation also explored the theological differences between Bishop Colenso and Bishop Gray, the Metropolitan of the Anglican Church. These differences ultimately led to Colenso's excommunication; however, history took an unexpected turn when he was readmitted into the Anglican Church in 2002.

The event's popularity suggests a strong appetite for similar gatherings in the future.  Stay tuned for updates on upcoming colloquia at The Mitre, as we unravel more stories from the annals of Bishops' history.
