Today Wednesday 10 September 2025, the newly appointed Executive Director Andy Wood (1977G) presented a talk in the series of talks held at The Mitre during the course of the year.
His topic was his experience together with Karen his wife, touring in South America, particularly to Machu Picchu, the 15th-century Inca citadel located in the Eastern Cordillera of southern Peru on a mountain ridge at 2,430 meters (7,970 ft) (this information withthe help from Wiki).
Andy explained its geographical location (typical for a Geography teacher!) situated in the Machupicchu District of Urubamba Province about 80 kilometers northwest of Cusco, above the Sacred Valley and along the Urubamba River, which forms a deep canyon with a subtropical mountain climate (this information with the help from Wiki).
Andy interwove interesting stories about encounters with the kind locals, the tough side of climbing mountains and the richness of such amazing outdoor travel - not forgetting the historical context, and the tragedies that befell the local population from colonialism and related diseases.
The talk was richly illustrated with overhead slides.
Tea and lovely scones were served, as is the custom with the talks.
We have had a number of talks this year so far with several still to come - for further information contact Paul Murray pmurray@bishops.org.za
